EDINBORO, Pa. -- The fifth-seeded Fairmont State University women's basketball team faced the fourth-seeded Indiana University of Pennsylvania Crimson Hawks in the first round of the NCAA Atlantic Regional. The Falcons fell to the Crimson Hawks, 76-61.
"It's obviously not the result we wanted to the end of the season," head coach
Stephanie Anderson said. "Shoutout to our five seniors, they have built this program to what it is at this point and I could not be more proud of them."
Leslie Huffman led the Falcons with 19 points while also grabbing four rebounds.
Alyssa DeAngelo added 13 points with two steals.
Jalen Gibbs got the scoring started with a basket in the paint but Indiana scored six of the next seven points to lead 6-3. The two sides went back-and-forth until Gibbs and Huffman made consecutive layups to give the Falcons a 14-12 lead.Â
Bre Wilson hit a three to extend the lead but the Crimson Hawks quickly went on a 5-0 run to even the score at 17. With 19 seconds left in the first,
Leslie Huffman found Wilson in the paint for the easy layup to lead by two, 19-17, going to the second period.
The two sides continued to trade baskets before IUP scored seven-straight to hold a 26-23 advantage. FSU answered with the next four points to regain the lead but it was short-lived. The Crimson Hawks went on a 10-0 run to open a 36-27 lead with 2:21 left in the half.Â
Over the final minutes of the half, Fairmont State had three-separate trips to the free throw line but were only able to make three free throws. Going into the half, IUP led 36-30.
In the opening three minutes of the third period, the Falcons were able to outscore the Crimson Hawks, 8-2 and evened the score at 38. However, Indiana rattled off the next six points.Â
Fairmont State was able to narrow the gap to four points on different occasions but each time, IUP went on a small run to answer. As the third period came to a close, the Crimson Hawks led 60-50.
In the fourth period, Indiana slowly stretched its lead to as large as 20 (73-53) with 4:11 left in regulation. The Falcons were only able to cut the difference to 16 before ultimately falling by the 15-point margin.
The women's basketball team finishes the season with an overall record of 27-5 while going 17-3 in conference play.Â
