FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team battled Shepherd University in non-conference showdown. The Falcons were taken down by the Rams, 9-0.
Both teams left runners on base in the first inning but in the second, Shepherd struck first. The Rams scored on an RBI single to left center to take an early 1-0 lead.Â
In the top of the fourth, the visitors added another run on a wild pitch. Shepherd scored once more in the frame thanks to a sacrifice fly to center field.
As Fairmont State struggled to drive runners in, the Rams found more offensive success in the sixth. The visitors scored a run on a triple down the right field line before a two-run homer made it a 6-0 game.
The Falcons best chance came in the bottom of the seventh as the bases were loaded with no outs. Unfortunately, they were unable to drive in a run as they still trailed by six.
Shepherd extended its lead in the ninth when three runs scored on single to center field. In the bottom half, the Falcons once again had a runner in scoring position but were unsuccessful in plating the run and fell by the 9-0 final.
Fairmont State (9-8) welcomes West Virginia State University on Friday, March 21 for an MEC doubleheader. Game one is set to begin at 1:00 p.m. from Mylan Park.
