FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team continued conference play against the University of Charleston. The Falcons were defeated in both games, 6-2 and 11-9 with game two going 10 innings.
Game 1: Charleston 6, Fairmont State 2
The first run of the game came in the second inning when
Cameron Moore singled to drive in
Ryan Goff to give Fairmont State the early lead. In the next half inning, Charleston got on the board with an RBI ground ball to tie the game at one.
In the fourth, the Golden Eagles took the lead when they drew walks with the bases loaded on two occasions for the 3-1 advantage. The Falcons were able to pull within one in the fifth as Goff scored once more on a ground ball from Moore.
Charleston extended its lead in the fifth when it scored on three-straight at-bats to hold a four-run edge (6-2). Fairmont State had chances in the sixth and seventh innings with runners in scoring position but were unable to capitalize and fell by the four-run difference.
Game 2: Charleston 11, Fairmont State 9 (10 Inn.)
The Golden Eagles opened the scoring in the first inning with an RBI single. The visitors remained in front until the bottom of the second when
Quintin Reep scored on a Goff single. Later in the frame,
Tyler Haskins drove a ball out of the park for a two-run homer and the 3-1 lead.
Charleston made it a one-run game in the third thanks to single that plated a run. The game stayed in favor of the Falcons until the sixth when the visitors tied it at three with a solo home run.
Fairmont State regained the lead in the bottom half as two runs scored on consecutive errors to lead 5-3 going to the final inning of regulation. Unfortunately, the Golden Eagles scored four runs on five hits to go ahead, 7-5.
With a runner on and down to their final out, the Falcons got their big swing of the bat from
Micah Canterbury as he hit a two-run homer to send the game to extra innings.
Neither team was able to score in the eighth but in the ninth, the visitors quickly scored two runs off a homer. Fairmont State had an answer in the bottom half when
Zach Brennan singled to left field as
Quintin Smith and
Tyler Haskins scored to go to the 10th.
In the inning, Charleston regained the lead when two runs were plated on a single to left. Down to its final three outs, FSU tried to tie the game but were unsuccessful and fell in the extra inning affair.
Fairmont State (11-10) hits the road on Tuesday, March 25 to face Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
