FSU and West Liberty Draw Even After Lengthy Delay

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team faced West Liberty University on a rain soaked Sunday afternoon. After a back-and-forth of locations and an hour rain delay, the Falcons split with the Hilltoppers by winning game one, 5-2, before falling 2-1 in the second.

Game 1: Fairmont State 5, West Liberty 2

In the first inning, Fairmont State captured the lead when Elizabeth Waszkiewicz singled through the left side to plate Bella Hess. The Falcons held the 1-0 advantage until the top of the third as Alexa Foresha hit a bases clearing double to make it 4-0 contest. Later in the inning, Delaney Haller helped her own cause with a solo home run to left center.

West Liberty struggled to get anything going offensively until the bottom of the seventh. The hosts got on the board with a two-run homer but those were the only runs the Falcons allowed in the win.

Haller earned the win as she pitched 5.1 innings, giving up two hits and no runs with five strikeouts. Four different Falcons finished with multiple hits.

Game 2: West Liberty 2, Fairmont State 1

The second half of the double header was a pitchers duel over the first three and a half innings. The Hilltoppers scored the first runs in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI double followed by an RBI single to lead 2-0.

As the game progressed, Fairmont State struggled to get anything going until the top of the seventh. Foresha hit a ground ball that allowed Waszkiewicz to score. The Falcons were able to get another runner in scoring position but were unable to tie the game as they fell by the one-run deficit.

Fairmont State (22-11-1) was supposed to face Malone University on Tuesday, April but unfortunately due to scheduling conflicts, the doubleheader was postponed. The Falcons next games will occur on Saturday, April 5 against Salem University. The doubleheader will take place at the Bridgeport Recreation Complex in Bridgeport, West Virginia. Start time is set for 1:00 p.m.
