FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team faced Kentucky Wesleyan College to start a four-game series. The Falcons fell to the Panthers, 7-4.
Kentucky Wesleyan got the scoring start in the top of the second inning with a bases clearing double to right center to lead 3-0. The visitors then added another run with a single through the right side.
In the bottom half of the inning, Fairmont State had runners on the corners with
Ryan Goff in the box. Goff hit a ground ball to the shortstop and on the fielder's choice,
Zach Brennan was able to score to make it a 4-1 game.Â
Neither team was able to get a run across home until the bottom of the fourth.
Quintin Reep was able to tag on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Kris Sutton. Going to the fifth, the Panthers remained ahead by two (4-2).
In the top of the sixth, Kentucky Wesleyan grew its lead back to four with RBI doubles to right center and down the left field line, respectively. Moving to the eighth inning, the visitors scored one more on a wild pitch to lead 7-2.
The score remained that way until the bottom of the ninth when the Falcons tried to mount a comeback. With two outs and the bases loaded, Brennan doubled to left center as
Cameron Moore and
Tyler Haskins scored. Unfortunately, that was the end of the threat for the hosts as they left two runners in scoring position to end the game.Â
Brennan, Reep,
Noah Canterbury and
Tyler Wilkinson each finished with two hits on the day. Brennan drove in two runs and scored once.Â
Fairmont State (3-5) continues its series with Kentucky Wesleyan with a doubleheader on Saturday, March 8. Game one is set to start at 12:00 p.m.
