NUTTER FORT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State University baseball team concluded its series against Salem University. The Falcons dropped the first game, 4-0, before claiming the second, 7-6.
Game 1: Salem 4. Fairmont State 0
In the opening frame, Fairmont State had a chance to score first with the bases loaded but were unsuccessful. However, Salem took the lead in the bottom half with a two-run homer.
The Tigers were able to add two more runs in the second in part to an error. The Falcons were able to piece together hits over the next few innings.
Fairmont State was able to work the bases loaded in the fifth but once again, were unable to drive a run across the plate as they fell, 4-0.
Game 2: Fairmont State 7, Salem 6
The Falcons were able to take the early lead in the second game when
Quintin Smith homered to center field as
Tyler Haskins was on base. Unfortunately, the Tigers responded in the bottom half with a grand slam to claim a 4-2 lead.
In the top of the third,
Micah Canterbury cut the difference in half with a single to left field as
Quintin Reep scored. Salem recaptured a two-run lead in the fourth as a run scored on a single through the left side.Â
Just like the third, Fairmont State narrowed the margin to one (5-4) as
Maddox Johnston scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of
Gunner Riley. Unfortunately, the hosts once again made it a two-run game with an RBI single in the bottom half.Â
Down to their final three outs, the Falcons started to chip away starting with an RBI double from Reep. Canterbury followed up with a single to left as Reep scored. With the game tied at six,
Tyler Wilkinson doubled to left center to bring home
Kellen Kinsler for the 7-6 edge.
As
Dylan Gongola was on the mound, he got the Tigers to go down in order for the road win.
Gongola earned the win in relief as he pitched 2.1 innings, allowing just one run on four hits.
Cameron Moore, Reep and Canterbury each finished with two hits as Reep drove in a run and scored twice.
Fairmont State (18-16) will host Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 15 for Military Appreciation Night. Start time is set for 6:00 p.m.
