SALEM, Va. -- The Fairmont State University softball team faced the University of Charleston in day two of the Mountain East Conference Softball Tournament. The Falcons bested the Golden Eagles, 5-1 and advanced to the winner's bracket final.
Both teams threatened in the first inning with a runner on second base but were unable to produce a run. After a scoreless top of the second, Fairmont State took the lead when
Alexa Foresha hit a lead-off home run over the left field fence.
Charleston tied the game in the third with an RBI double to left field but the Falcons had a response in the bottom half. With two outs and the bases loaded, Foresha stepped in the box and delivered a bases clearing double to left center to put the team ahead 4-1.
Over the next three innings,
Delaney Haller only allowed two base runners with two strikeouts. Fairmont State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when
Bella Hess singled to left field as
Grace Sobeck raced home.
In the top of the seventh the Golden Eagles were unsuccessful in attempting a rally as the Falcons won by the four-run difference.
Haller (21-2) pitched a complete game, allowing the lone run (earned) on six hits with two strikeouts. Foresha finsihed the day going 2-3 from the plate with four RBI and scoring once. Hess was the other Falcon to finish with two hits as she plated a run and scored as well.
Fairmont State (36-17-1) will face a familiar foe in West Liberty University in the winner's bracket final on Friday, May 2 in Salem, Virginia. Start time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
