BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State Athletics placed second in the 2024-25 Mountain East Conference Commissioner's Cup standings, which is the league's annual award that recognizes overall athletic excellence among its membership. The second-place finish is the highest finish in the MEC Commissioner's Cup standings in Fairmont State history.
Fairmont State swept the MEC men's and women's basketball championships and won the Acrobatics & Tumbling title in an across-the-board impressive year in athletics. The Falcons' softball team also finished first in the North Division. Additionally, the baseball, men's swimming, men's and women's tennis teams finished second in their respective MEC Tournaments.
The Commissioner's Cup standings are compiled utilizing an "all-sports rating." This rating is determined by a formula that awards points to a school for its regular season finish equal to the number of teams per sport sponsored by the MEC, and then divided by the number of sports offered by the institution. The final rating is a percentage of points acquired against the number of points availableÂ
(average percentile finish in the standings of each sport sponsored by an institution). A bonus point is given for winning the conference tournament (in applicable sports).
The University of Charleston claimed its third-straight first-place finish after posting an all-sports rating of 0.95405. Glenville State University rounded out the top three with an all-sports rating of 0.56725 to take shome third.
