BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. — Fairmont State University dominated Salem with a decisive 9-0 victory on Sunday at The Bridge Sports Complex. The Falcons scored eight goals in the second half, highlighted by a hat trick. The defense kept the Tigers without a single shot on goal, recording a shutout.
The first half began with the Falcons applying consistent pressure, evidenced by multiple shots on goal in the opening minutes, including efforts from
Colletta Hardman and
Montserrat Diaz that were saved by the Tigers' goalkeeper, Janiya Brooks-Crews. Despite the Falcons' aggressive attack, it was
Valentina Gianinetto who broke the deadlock with a penalty kick goal in the 44th minute, securing a 1-0 lead. Even as
Sam Yuen's last-minute shot was saved, the Falcons concluded the half ahead, reflecting their strong offensive presence.
The second half began with a burst of energy from the Falcons, as
Tatiana Mayumi scored just 35 seconds in, assisted by
Serenity Thomas. This set the stage for a dominant performance by the visiting team, with
Arrington Sparks netting a hat-trick by the 53rd minute, including two goals assisted by
Payton Parliament and one solo effort. Thomas added to the tally with two goals in quick succession, bringing the score to 8-0, and
Kate Bertrand capped the scoring with a goal in the 69th minute, assisted by
Lena Stockfisch.
Serenity Thomas tallied two goals and added two assists, leading the Falcons with a total of six points. Sparks recorded a hat trick, scoring three goals on four shots. Gianinetto netted the game-winning goal, converting one of her two shots. Bertrand and Mayumi each scored a goal, contributing to the Falcons' offensive efforts.
Fairmont State (4-0) returns home to face Point Park University on Wednesday, September 24. Start time from Duvall-Rosier Field is set for 7:00 p.m.
