Volleyball Sweeps Glenville State in Straight Sets Behind Balanced Attack

GLENVILLE, W.Va. — Fairmont State University swept Glenville State University in straight sets, 25-22, 25-18, 25-17, on Friday at the Waco Center. The Falcons dominated with 42 kills and an efficient serving game, recording seven aces against the Pioneers' three. The match concluded in just over an hour, highlighting the Falcons' balanced attack and solid defense, which included 68 digs and eight total blocks.

Fairmont State and Glenville State commenced their match with closely contested exchanges. Fairmont State's Kelsie Dangerfield set up Josie Nobbe for an early kill, keeping the score even at 1-1. The set continued with both teams trading points until the Falcons capitalized on Glenville's errors, with McKenzi Martin delivering a pivotal service ace to gain a slight edge.

As the set progressed, the Falcons' Joey Borelle and Martin executed crucial kills, aiding in maintaining their momentum. Despite Glenville's efforts to level the score with a series of aces and kills, the Falcons responded with key plays from Cayden Anschutz and Natalie Zemba, pulling ahead in the closing moments.

The Falcons secured the first set by extending their lead with a decisive service ace from Josie Skinn, concluding the set at 25-22.

The Falcons opened the second set with a decisive series of plays, building an early 2-0 lead through a block by Zemba and Nobbe, followed by a kill from Borelle. Dangerfield was instrumental in maintaining momentum, assisting on several key plays, including kills by Nobbe and Martin, propelling the Falcons to a 7-2 advantage.

They continued to capitalize on the Pioneers' errors, extending the lead to 13-6 with a series of points that included a service ace from Skinn and a block by Martin. Anschutz added several kills, with assists from Belle DeVall, solidifying their control.

Despite the Pioneers' late attempts to close the gap, the Falcons maintained their lead through strong offensive plays, including a decisive kill by Borelle to reach set point. The Falcons concluded the set with a service error from the Pioneers, sealing the set at 25-18.

The Falcons seized control early in the third set, beginning with a kill by Borelle from Dangerfield to establish a lead. The team maintained pressure with key plays, such as Nobbe's kill and Alexa Martin's block, advancing the score to 6-2. Despite some attack errors, the Falcons capitalized on the Pioneers' miscues to maintain their advantage.

Midway through the set, the Falcons extended their lead with a service ace and a series of kills, including contributions from Anschutz and Borelle. Dangerfield continued to set up successful attacks, with Nobbe finishing several points to push the score to 22-16.

Closing the set with a 25-17 victory, the Falcons demonstrated efficiency in both offense and defense, highlighted by Zemba's kill from Dangerfield to secure the final point.

Nobbe led the Falcons with a strong performance, recording 14 kills on 23 attempts for a hitting percentage of .565, while also contributing five total blocks. Borelle posted a noteworthy defensive effort, collecting 16 digs. Skinn added to the team's service game with three aces and also tallied 13 digs. Meanwhile, Anschutz contributed seven kills from 18 attempts, finishing with a .111 hitting percentage.

Fairmont State (11-4, 1-0) returns to Joe Retton Arena on Tuesday, September 30 for a pivotal match against Wheeling University. Start time is set for 7:00 p.m.
