Men's Basketball Tops 13th-Ranked West Liberty 99-89

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (11-3, 6-2 MEC) secured a 99-89 victory over 13th-ranked West Liberty University (10-3, 5-1 MEC) in a conference clash at Joe Retton Arena on Saturday. The Falcons capitalized on free throws, converting 33 of 40 attempts, to overcome a halftime deficit.

Fairmont State began the first half asserting control with Tyheil Peterson's jumper and CJ Meredith's three-pointer, establishing an early lead. The team displayed strong defensive efforts, securing 16 defensive rebounds and recording two blocks. Despite multiple turnovers, the Falcons maintained momentum with seven successful three-pointers and eight assists, showcasing effective ball movement.

As the half progressed, the Falcons and Hilltoppers exchanged leads seven times, highlighting the tightly contested nature of the game. Fairmont State's bench contributed significantly, adding 7 points, while the team capitalized on fast breaks with 4 points. The first half concluded with the Falcons trailing narrowly, 43-41, after a late layup by the Hilltoppers.

Fairmont State opened the second half by quickly closing the gap and taking the lead with a layup from Rene Diop, followed by two successful free throws. The home team maintained momentum with consistent scoring, including a key three-pointer by Miguel Martinez at 13:50, pushing the score to 56-54.

Midway through the half, the Falcons extended their advantage with strong defensive rebounds and efficient free-throw shooting, highlighted by Caleb Thomas's dunk at 12:13, securing a 62-59 lead. Peterson added crucial free throws, contributing to a 66-63 edge.

In the latter half, the Falcons surged with a series of three-pointers from Meredith and Peterson, widening their lead to 92-78. Despite the Hilltoppers' attempts to close the gap, Fairmont State's defense held firm, pulling off the 10-point victory. This is the first regular season win over West Liberty since January 14, 2023 when the Falcons won 101-76 in Joe Retton Arena.

Peterson scored 21 points, converting 8 of 9 free throws, and added 5 rebounds. Meredith led with 24 points, including five 3-pointers, and tallied 6 rebounds. Drey Carter posted 22 points and recorded 8 rebounds. Zycheus Dobbs contributed with 8 assists and collected 7 rebounds.

Fairmont State welcomes Point Park University to campus on Wednesday, January 14 for an MEC matchup. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
