Fairmont State Stifles Salem with Strong Defense

SALEM, W.Va. — Fairmont State (13-3) secured a commanding 98-68 victory over Salem (6-9) at T. Edward Davis Gymnasium on Saturday. The Falcons built a strong lead with a 59-point first half, maintaining their advantage throughout the game. They capitalized on the Tigers' 20 turnovers, scoring 21 points off those opportunities, and dominated the glass with a 46-31 rebounding edge.

Fairmont State opened the game strong, starting with a 3–0 lead following David Jolinder's scoring efforts. The Falcons maintained momentum through the first half, with Miguel Martinez assisting Rene Diop and Jolinder, contributing to a solid 8–0 run. The Tigers managed to close the gap slightly, but the Falcons consistently pushed the lead back, highlighted by a three-pointer from CJ Meredith.

Throughout the half, the Falcons demonstrated effective ball movement, evidenced by 14 assists, and capitalized on second-chance opportunities, securing nine offensive rebounds. The team extended its lead by scoring effectively from the free-throw line, converting 14 of 16 attempts. By the end of the first half, the Falcons led 59–41, setting a strong foundation for the remainder of the game.

Fairmont State capitalized on the Tigers' early turnover to set the tone in the second half. Meredith contributed significantly with consecutive layups, extending the Falcons' advantage. The team demonstrated their defensive strength with seven steals and five blocks, stifling the Tigers' scoring opportunities.
