Fairmont State Edges Wheeling 74-71 in Conference Thriller

WHEELING, W.Va. — Fairmont State (10-3, 5-2 MEC) narrowly defeated Wheeling (8-4, 4-2 MEC) 74-71 in a tense conference matchup at the Alma McDonough Center. Fairmont State capitalized on turnovers, scoring 24 points off Wheeling's 21 turnovers.

Fairmont State opened the first half by establishing an early pace with effective fast-break points, including a layup from Tyheil Peterson at 17:48. The Falcons capitalized on the Cardinals' turnovers, amassing eight steals and converting these opportunities into points. David Jolinder was pivotal, scoring back-to-back baskets to tie and then take the lead.

As the half progressed, the Falcons maintained their momentum with effective offensive rebounds, allowing for second-chance points. Drey Carter contributed with a key three-pointer at 5:20, assisted by Rene Diop, extending the lead. The half closed with Fairmont State ahead, 33–26, signaling a strong start on both ends of the floor.

The second half opened with a shift in momentum as the Falcons countered the Cardinals' early surge. Despite a series of turnovers, Fairmont St. maintained composure and responded with a scoring streak led by Peterson and CJ Meredith, whose back-to-back three-pointers were crucial in regaining the lead.

Fairmont State capitalized on defensive stops and timely rebounds, extending their lead through efficient shooting from the free-throw line. Joey Brown and Miguel Martinez contributed significantly to maintaining the offensive pressure. The Falcons closed the half strong, securing a 74-71 advantage, setting the stage for a competitive continuation.

Jolinder finished with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, and recorded three steals. Carter added 10 points and contributed seven rebounds alongside two steals. Peterson posted 11 points while leading the team with five steals. Meredith scored 17 points, making four of seven from beyond the arc.

Fairmont State returns to Joe Retton Arena on Saturday, January 10 to face 13th-ranked West Liberty University. Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m.
