WHEELING, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (9-3, 4-2 MEC) defeated Wheeling University (6-7, 2-4 MEC), 76-67, with a dominant 56 points in the paint. The Falcons capitalized on turnovers to score 21 points, securing the victory.
Fairmont State started with a strong presence in the paint, outscoring the Cardinals 16–10 in that area during the first quarter. The visitors maintained control with key plays, including
Leila Jones' 3-pointer at 4:48, which extended their lead to 13–6.
Alanna Tate contributed significantly with multiple baskets, helping the Falcons to a 19–10 advantage at the end of the quarter.
The Falcons asserted control in the second quarter, launching a pivotal 12–3 run in the opening minutes, highlighted by
Ryan Davis's layup at 9:26 off an assist from
Gabby Reep.
Haylen Cook contributed significantly with a fastbreak layup at 8:58, further widening the lead. The Falcons maintained their edge in the paint, recording 18 points and securing 10 baskets from 18 attempts. Their defensive efforts yielded three steals and two blocks, contributing to a 20–16 advantage in the quarter. The Falcons led 39–26 at halftime.
Fairmont State maintained their lead through the third quarter, highlighted by
Zaniya Murray's consistent scoring inside the paint, including a layup at 7:14. Defensive efforts were bolstered by Davis, who recorded a block and a rebound in quick succession at 6:43, preventing the Cardinals from gaining momentum. Despite Wheeling's attempts to close the gap, the Falcons' steady performance, particularly in the paint where they scored 14 points, ensured a 56–43 lead at the end of the third quarter.
Fairmont State maintained their lead early in the fourth with Reep hitting a 3-pointer at 9:18, assisted by
Mackenzie Swayne, extending the score to 59-45. Murray added a layup shortly after, keeping the momentum on the Falcons' side. Despite Wheeling's attempts to close the gap, the Falcons responded effectively, including a key jumper by Tate at 4:19 to keep the visitors ahead 67-59.
Wheeling narrowed the margin significantly, but the Falcons secured the win with decisive free throws in the final minute. Jones hit crucial shots from the line, pushing the score to 76-67. The game ended with a Falcons victory, final score 76-67.
Tate led the team with 20 points and collected seven rebounds. Murray scored 14 points, going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field, and recorded two steals. Reep contributed with 10 points and added five assists. Cook added 12 points and collected three steals.
