GLENVILLE, W.Va. — The 20th-ranked Fairmont State women's soccer team (9-0-2, 7-0-2) defeated Glenville State (5-6-0, 5-4-0) 1-0 on Sunday. The Falcons generated 22 shots, including 17 in the first half, while holding the Pioneers to three shots.
Sam Yuen scored in the 23rd minute off an assist from
Serenity Thomas, and the Falcons took a 1-0 lead they carried into halftime. Early in the first, the Falcons created the sharper early chances, including
Arrington Sparks hitting the left woodwork in the fourth minute and back-to-back corner kicks in the 19th minute before
Braylyn Sparks put a shot on frame at 20:27.
After Yuen's goal, the Falcons kept pressing with saved shots from Yuen, Thomas and Thomas again before adding another corner at 29:43. The Falcons closed the half with another extended attacking stretch, getting two saved shots from
Dahlia Welter and additional on-target efforts from
Emelly Chicas,
Addison Castaneda and Yuen, while
Olivia Johnston's side reached the break ahead 1-0.
The Falcons kept the Pioneers off the board throughout the second half and closed out a 1-0 road win. In the beginning of the second half, the Falcons created the first chances after the break, with
Arrington Sparks forcing a save in the 48th minute and Yuen sending a shot high in the 50th.
Valentina Gianinetto and Thomas each put shots on frame during a Falcons attacking stretch, while Yuen added another attempt in the 69th minute. The Pioneers earned a corner in the 70th minute and put one shot on goal in the 77th, but Johnston made the save as the Falcons protected the shutout through a physical closing stretch.
Yuen scored the game-winning goal and led the Falcons with six shots, including three on goal. Thomas recorded the assist and put all three of her shots on frame. Johnston played all 90 minutes in goal, made one save and finished with a shutout.
Fairmont State returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Wednesday, October 7 to face the University of Charleston. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
