FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (20-3, 14-2 MEC) secured a convincing 77-60 victory over Wheeling (14-8, 9-6 MEC) at Joe Retton Arena on Wednesday night. The Falcons capitalized on their long-range shooting, hitting 13 of 35 from beyond the arc, and dominated the boards with a 45-37 rebounding advantage.
Fairmont State opened the first half with strong offensive play, quickly establishing momentum.
Drey Carter led the charge with effective scoring in the paint, contributing to the team's early lead. The team capitalized on fast-break opportunities and bench scoring, outpacing the Cardinals in the opening minutes.
The home team maintained its advantage by shooting efficiently from beyond the arc, with
CJ Meredith and
Miguel Martinez each sinking key 3-pointers. The Falcons' defense also made significant contributions, with
Rene Diop recording multiple blocks and defensive rebounds, limiting Wheeling's scoring attempts. The half closed with the Falcons leading 41-26, holding a solid advantage into the next half.
The second half began with the Falcons maintaining their lead, highlighted by a key layup from Carter, followed by a fast-break dunk from
David Jolinder to extend the score to 45-30. Diop contributed defensively with a block at 15:59, and Meredith added a 3-pointer at 10:05, pushing the team further ahead.
Martinez was instrumental, hitting multiple 3-pointers, including one at 6:13. The Falcons capitalized on turnovers and maintained pressure, pushing the score to 75-47 with Martinez's contribution. Despite the Cardinals' late 3-pointer, the Falcons closed the game leading 77-60.
Martinez scored 20 points, including six 3-pointers. Carter added a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Meredith contributed 15 points, converting four 3-pointers.
Zycheus Dobbs added seven assists with five rebounds.
Fairmont State is set for a top 10 matchup with West Liberty University on Saturday, February 14. Tip-off is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
