MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (0-2) faced Walsh University (2-0) in a doubleheader at Dale Miller Field on Friday, suffering defeats in both games, 17-2 in game one and then by a close score of 4-3.
Game 1: Walsh 17, Fairmont State 2
In the first game, Walsh took an early lead in the first inning, scoring four runs. A single by Brodey Acres and an error allowed the first run to score, followed by Ryan Bruni's two-RBI single. Brandon Hire added another run with an RBI single. Fairmont State responded with a run in the bottom of the inning when
Bryont Green singled up the middle, bringing home
Kris Sutton. The score stood at 4-1 after the first inning.
Walsh extended its lead in the third inning with Brady Rollyson's solo homer and Josh Algarin's RBI double, making it 6-1. The fourth inning saw the Cavaliers add two more runs with Bruni's two-RBI single, increasing the lead to 8-1.
In the fifth inning, Walsh capitalized on walks and wild pitches to score six runs. An error allowed another run to score, pushing the lead to 14-1. Walsh added two more runs in the sixth inning with Bruni's two-RBI single, extending the lead to 16-1. The Falcons managed to score again in the seventh inning.
Gunner Riley walked and later scored on Sutton's RBI single, making the final score 17-2 in favor of the Cavaliers.
Sutton contributed with two hits and drove in one run.
Cam Cole recorded two hits and added a stolen base. Green delivered a hit and an RBI while handling four assists defensively.
Game 2: Walsh 4, Fairmont State 3
In the second game, Fairmont State took an early lead in the second inning.
Kris Sutton doubled, and
Reilly Bubb singled to bring Sutton home, making it 1-0 for the Falcons after two innings. The fifth inning saw both teams add to their runs. Walsh scored twice to take the lead, but Fairmont State responded with a rally.
Cam Cole singled, and
Bryont Green doubled to drive in a run.
Maddox Johnston then singled, bringing Green home and tying the game at 3-3 through five innings.
However, despite a strong start, Fairmont State conceded two runs in the top of the seventh inning, which gave the Cavaliers the lead. The Falcons managed to put runners on base in their half but could not capitalize, ending the game with the score 4-3 in favor of Walsh.
Connor Tingler started the game for Fairmont State, pitching 4 innings without allowing an earned run and striking out three batters. Tingler faced 17 batters, allowing two hits and three walks.
Mac Schnur came in as a reliever, pitching 2 2/3 innings, but surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and one walk while striking out three.
Luke Emory made a brief appearance, recording one out with a strikeout and one walk in his 1/3 inning of work, without giving up a hit.
Bryont Green recorded four hits and an RBI, along with a double. Bubb contributed offensively with a hit and an RBI, while also drawing a walk and getting hit by a pitch. Sutton added a double and scored a run, while also throwing out one of two attempted base stealers defensively.
Fairmont State concludes its four-game series against Walsh on Saturday, February 21 from Mylan Park in Morgantown, West Virginia. Game on is set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
