FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (6-2) swept California (Pa.) (0-2) in a Friday doubleheader at Duvall-Rosier Field, winning the first game 8-0 and the second game 10-5. The Falcons showcased their offensive prowess, recording 13 hits in the first game and 15 hits in the second, while also stealing a total of nine bases across both contests.
Game 1: Fairmont State 8, California (Pa.) 0 (5 Inn.)
In the first game, Fairmont State took an early lead in the first inning when
Gabby Bibb singled, followed by Emily Paul doubling to right center to drive in Bibb for the first run. The Falcons led 1-0 after the first inning.
The decisive third inning saw Fairmont State extend their lead significantly.
Bella Hess singled and later stole second, setting up Bibb's single to advance Hess to third. Paul then hit a single, bringing home both Hess and Bibb, and a throwing error allowed Paul to advance. A double from
Alexa Foresha brought Paul home, and
Jaylin McGill later singled, scoring two more runs to make it 6-0.
In the fourth inning, Fairmont State loaded the bases with no outs, and after a fielder's choice, a wild pitch allowed Paul to score, extending the lead to 7-0. The final run of the game came in the fifth inning from a pinch-hit single by
Kensy Thomas, who scored on a sacrifice fly by
Sophia Frye, ending the game at 8-0.
Delaney Haller pitched a complete-game shutout, allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out two of the 19 batters faced. Bibb led with three hits and two runs, while Paul contributed two hits, including a double, and three RBIs.
Game 2: Fairmont State 10, California (Pa.) 5
In the second game, Fairmont State jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when
Gabby Bibb singled and scored on a single by
Avery Townsend, who then scored on an error.
The momentum continued into the second inning with
Jaylin McGill doubling and scoring on a throwing error after a bunt single by
Paige Matteson. Bibb drove in
Bella Hess with a single, and after two innings, the Falcons led 5-0.
California got on the board with a run in the third inning, but Fairmont State responded with a run of its own as McGill scored on a single by Abbie Keilhoz. The Falcons added two more runs in the fourth when
Sydney Emanuel doubled and scored on a fielder's choice by
Carly Crowder, followed by Townsend scoring on a sacrifice fly by
Taylor Bernard, making it 8-1.
In the fifth inning, California scored two runs, but Fairmont State matched them with two runs of their own as Hess scored on a single by
Emma Paul, and Paul later scored on a single by Townsend. Although California attempted a late comeback with two runs in the seventh, Fairmont State held on to win 10-5.
The Falcons utilized four pitchers, with
Phoebe Rusnak starting and allowing only one earned run over 3 1/3 innings. Townsend led the offense with three hits, two RBIs, and two runs scored, while Paul contributed two hits, including a double, and an RBI.
Fairmont State hosts Indiana University of Pennsylvania on Wednesday, March 4 from Duvall-Rosier Field. The doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
