Fairmont State Claims Conference Wins Over Concord

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State University (9-6, 3-1) concluded a successful doubleheader against Concord University (6-14, 1-3) on Sunday, securing a 6–4 victory in the first game and following it up with a 4–3 win in the second game.

Game 1: Fairmont State 6, Concord 4

In Game 1, the Falcons collected 11 hits, including a home run, to clinch the conference win. Fairmont State opened the game with a strong offensive performance in the first inning. Cam Cole doubled down the right field line, followed by Kris Sutton's RBI single, allowing Cole to score. Bryont Green reached on a fielder's choice, and TJ Hughes then hit a two-run homer, bringing home Green. The Falcons took an early 3–0 lead.

The Mountain Lions managed to score their first run in the third inning when Sam Stowe walked, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Dawson Gragg's RBI groundout. The Falcons responded with Cole singling, stealing second, and scoring on Green's RBI groundout, making it 4–1 in favor of the Falcons.

Concord added another run in the fourth when Korbin Bostic and Lucas Cannon were both hit by pitches, with Cannon scoring on Stowe's RBI double, narrowing the lead to 4–2. The fifth inning saw the Mountain Lions close the gap further with Gragg scoring on Jared Lavergne's RBI single. The Falcons answered back as Cole and Sutton both singled, allowing Cole to score on a sacrifice fly by Green. Hughes then singled Sutton home, extending the lead to 6–3.

The Mountain Lions scored again in the sixth with Tyson Burke tripling and scoring on Stowe's RBI single, but the Falcons maintained a 6–4 lead and held Concord scoreless in the seventh inning to seal the victory.

Caden Goodwin pitched 6 innings, allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits, while striking out 1 and walking 1. Isaac Van Meter contributed a scoreless inning in relief, securing the save with only 8 pitches thrown.

Cam Cole excelled at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and scoring three runs. Sutton contributed with two hits and drove in one run, while Hughes led the offense with three hits, including a home run, and drove in three runs.

Game 2: Fairmont State 4, Concord 3

In Game 2, Fairmont State and Concord each scored in the first inning. Cam Cole singled and advanced to second on an error before reaching third and scoring on a wild pitch, tying the game at 1-1. Concord then took a 3–1 lead in the second inning, highlighted by Matthew DiSanti's two-RBI single. Fairmont State responded with two runs of its own when Cameron Moore homered to right field, and Reilly Bubb scored on Drew Emrich's groundout, leveling the score at 3-3.

The Falcons regained the lead in the fifth inning when TJ Hughes scored on a single by Bubb, bringing the score to 4–3. Dylan Travinski and Cameron Gonzalez combined to keep the Mountain Lions scoreless in the final innings, securing the 4–3 victory.

Dylan Travinski delivered a solid performance, pitching 6 1/3 innings with 104 pitches, allowing three earned runs on three hits while striking out two batters. Cameron Gonzalez came in as relief, pitching 2/3 of an inning, striking out two batters on eight pitches to earn his second save of the season. Cameron Moore finished with the solo home run, while Reilly Bubb tallied a hit, scored a run, drove in a run, and stole a base.

Fairmont State remians at home to face Clarion University on Wednesday, March 18. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
