Falcons Go 1-1 in Conference Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State (7-6, 1-1) split a doubleheader against Glenville State College (12-6, 1-1) at Dale Miller Field on Saturday, securing a 5–3 victory in the first game before falling 8–5 in the second.

Game 1: Fairmont State 5, Glenville State 3

In Game 1, Fairmont State secured the win thanks to a pivotal fifth inning that saw the Falcons score three runs, overcoming an early deficit. The Pioneers took a 2–0 lead in the third inning after capitalizing on a Fairmont State error, which allowed them to score two unearned runs. Glenville State extended its lead to 3–0 in the fifth with a solo home run by Colby Guy. 

However, Fairmont State responded dramatically in the bottom half of the inning. Drew Emrich singled and advanced to second base on a stolen base. Kris Sutton walked, setting the stage for Bryont Green, who tied the game with a three-run homer to right center, leveling the score at 3–3.

Fairmont State seized control in the sixth inning. Reilly Bubb walked and later stole third base, scoring on Maddox Johnston's single. Caleb Cottle also crossed the plate on a single by Cam Cole, giving the Falcons a two-run advantage, 5–3, at the end of the sixth. The Falcons maintained their lead, securing the victory.

Micah Canterbury pitched a complete game, allowing only 3 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 9 batters and issuing no walks. Bryont Green made an impact with his game-tying home run, driving in three runs. Bubb showcased his speed, stealing two bases and scoring a run, while Emrich contributed with a hit, a run, and a stolen base.

Game 2: Glenville State 8, Fairmont State 5

In Game 2, Fairmont State faced a tough challenge, falling to Glenville State with a final score of 8–5. The Pioneers jumped out to an early 3–0 lead in the first inning, with Jacob Meadow scoring on Colby Guy's RBI double, followed by Adam Bright and Guy crossing the plate. 

Fairmont State responded in the second inning when TJ Hughes walked and Cameron Moore was hit by a pitch, setting the stage for Caleb Cottle, who delivered a crucial single to narrow the gap to 3–2.

Glenville State extended its lead in the third inning when Guy homered to left center, making it a 4–2 game, and added to their advantage with a solo homer by Carlos De Je in the sixth, bringing the score to 5–2. The Pioneers then added three more runs in the top of the seventh, leading 8–2 going into the bottom half of the inning.

Fairmont State mounted a comeback attempt in the seventh. Maddox Johnston reached base on an error and scored on Bryont Green's RBI single. TJ Hughes and Cameron Moore each contributed RBI singles, bringing the Falcons within striking distance. Unfortunately, Fairmont State could not plate any more runs and fell by three.

Connor Tingler pitched 6 innings for Fairmont State, allowing 5 earned runs on 6 hits, including 2 home runs, while striking out 7 and walking 3. Cottle stood out with two RBIs and four assists in the game, while Moore finished with two hits, one RBI, and was hit by a pitch. Hughes tallied one hit, one RBI, and reached base with a walk, and Green added a hit, an RBI, and two assists on the field.

Fairmont State hosts Concord University on Sunday, March 15 at Mylan Park. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
