CALIFORNIA, Pa. — Fairmont State (6-3) defeated California (PA) (8-7) with a decisive 6-1 victory on Sunday at Roadman Park. Fairmont State swept the doubles matches and secured five singles wins to clinch the match.
Fairmont State secured the doubles point with victories across all three courts. At No. 1 doubles,
Hope Backx and
Lara Smith defeated Leandra Guldimann and Sofia Rodriguez, 6-1. The No. 2 doubles team of
Stephanie Gopar and
Maria Fonseca clinched the point with a 6-2 victory over Garance Laforet and Diletta Maria Mungo.
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel completed the sweep with a 6-2 win at No. 3 doubles against Lilli Schreiber and Fernanda Martinez.
In singles, the Falcons extended their lead as Backx dominated No. 2 singles, winning 6-0, 6-2 against Mungo. Akgul followed with a straight-set victory at No. 6 singles, defeating Rodriguez 7-5, 6-0. The Vulcans responded with a win at No. 3 singles, where Laforet overcame Smith, 6-3, 6-4.
Fonseca added another point for the Falcons at No. 1 singles, overcoming Guldimann in three sets, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Gopar furthered the lead by winning a three-set match at No. 4 singles against Martinez, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1. Maciel closed out the competition with a win at No. 5 singles, defeating Schreiber 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, securing a decisive victory for the Falcons.
Fairmont State returns to campus to face Edinboro University on Wednesday, March 25. The match is set to start at 3:00 p.m.
