Softball Sweeps Frostburg State in Conference Twinbill

FAIRMONT, W.Va. — Fairmont State (14-6, 6-0 MEC) secured a 5–1 victory over Frostburg State (15-3, 4-2 MEC) in the first game of their doubleheader at Duvall-Rosier Field on Wednesday, before edging out the Bobcats with a 3-2 win in the second game.

Game 1: Fairmont State 5, Frostburg State 1
 
In the first game, Fairmont State took an early lead with two runs in the first inning. Bella Hess reached first on a fielding error and later advanced to third. Emma Paul then tripled to right center, scoring Hess. Paul scored on a throwing error, giving the Falcons a 2–0 lead after the first inning.
 
The Falcons added another run in the second inning when Abbie Keilhoz singled and advanced on an error, allowing Avery Townsend to score after she singled and advanced to second on another error, making it 3–0.
 
Frostburg State managed to score in the fifth inning, but Fairmont State responded with two runs of their own. Townsend singled and eventually scored on a wild pitch, while Jaylin McGill singled to bring home Kensy Thomas, who was pinch running. The Falcons led 5–1 after five innings, and the score remained unchanged through the final two innings.
 
Micah Wilson pitched a complete game, allowing just one earned run over 7 innings against Frostburg State, facing 27 batters and yielding five hits with only one walk while striking out four. Avery Townsend recorded two hits and added a stolen base, while Emma Paul registered a triple and drove in a run, also making four assists defensively. Jaylin McGill collected two hits and an RBI.

Game 2: Fairmont State 3, Frostburg State 2
 
In the second game, Frostburg State took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Zoey Marinello scored on a single by Kylee Piconi, with the run being unearned due to a throwing error.
 
However, Fairmont State responded in the fifth inning. Bella Hess singled and advanced to second when Avery Townsend was hit by a pitch. Emma Paul reached on a fielding error, allowing Hess to score and Townsend to advance to third. Kensy Thomas then grounded out, bringing Townsend home for an unearned run, giving the Falcons a 2-1 lead.
 
In the seventh inning, the Bobcats tied the game briefly when Sage Haller doubled and scored on a double by Marinello. However, the Falcons quickly reclaimed the lead. Hess singled and advanced on a bunt single by Townsend. Paul then doubled to left center, driving in Hess as the Falcons walked it off, 3-2.
 
Delaney Haller pitched 5 innings without allowing an earned run, striking out two batters and yielding four hits. Caitlin Morey contributed with 2 innings of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits.
 
Hess scored two runs and collected two hits in the game, while Paul drove in one run with a double and recorded five assists from her shortstop position. Jaylin McGill drew two walks and added a hit while also making four assists at third base.

Fairmont State hits the road on Saturday, March 28 to face Point Park University. First pitch is set for 1:00 p.m.
