PITTSBURGH, Pa. — Fairmont State University (18-6, 8-0 MEC) swept Point Park University (7-16, 2-6 MEC) with a decisive 9-1 victory in game one, followed by a 4-1 win in game two on Monday at Fairhaven Park.
Game 1: Fairmont State 9, Point Park 1 (5 Inn.)
In game one, Fairmont State opened the scoring in the second inning with a powerful offensive display, racking up five runs.
Jaylin McGill started the rally with a single up the middle, followed by a walk to
Paige Matteson. Abbie Keilhoz then delivered a double to center field, driving in both McGill and Matteson.
Bella Hess walked, stole second, and advanced on a wild pitch, setting up
Avery Townsend to reach on a fielder's choice that allowed Keilhoz to score.
Emma Paul capped the inning with a single to center, bringing in Townsend and Hess, giving the Falcons a commanding 5-0 lead after two innings.
The scoring continued for Fairmont State in the third inning as
Alexa Foresha singled, and walks to Matteson and Nogay loaded the bases. Hess walked, scoring Foresha, which brought the score to 6-1 by the end of the inning.
The Falcons maintained their momentum in the fifth, with McGill doubling down the left field line. After a single by Matteson, Keilhoz doubled again, scoring McGill, and Hess followed with a double of her own, bringing in both Matteson and Keilhoz. The inning concluded with Fairmont State holding a commanding 9-1 lead.
Point Park managed a lead-off double in the bottom of the fifth but could not capitalize, as the Falcons closed out the game with an eight-run margin.
Delaney Haller pitched 4 innings, allowing 6 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 1 batter.
Liz Alsop contributed 1 inning in relief, allowing just 1 hit through 4 batters faced, with no earned runs or walks.
Hess drove in three runs with a double and added a stolen base. Keilhoz scored two runs, hitting two doubles and driving in three runs. McGill added two runs and two hits, including a double, and recorded a stolen base. Paul finished with two hits, including a double, and drove in two runs.
Game 2: Fairmont State 4, Point Park 1
In game two, Fairmont State struck first in the first inning when
Bella Hess singled down the left-field line, advancing on a single by
Avery Townsend. Both Hess and
Emma Paul, who reached on a fielder's choice, scored when
Breonna Marietta singled up the middle, giving the Falcons a 2-0 lead.
The Falcons extended their lead to 3-0 in the second inning, with Hess singling again and being brought home by a single from Paul.
In the fourth inning, Hess continued her impressive performance, singling and stealing both second and third bases before scoring on Paul's double to left field. Point Park managed to respond with a run in the bottom half, bringing the score to 4-1 in favor of the Falcons.
However, neither team scored further, and the game concluded with Fairmont State securing the victory.
Caitlin Morey delivered a stellar complete game performance for the Falcons in game two, pitching 7 innings while allowing just one earned run. She faced 29 batters, striking out four and walking three, while giving up five hits.
Bella Hess scored three runs, collected four hits, and stole two bases.
Avery Townsend added three hits while
Emma Paul recorded two RBIs with two hits and scored once.
Fairmont State returns to Duvall-Rosier Field on Friday, April 3 to face Wheeling University. Doubleheader is set to start at 1:00 p.m.
