SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. — Fairmont State (7-5) fell to No. 39 Slippery Rock (5-1) with a final score of 6-1 on Sunday at the SRU Tennis Courts. Fairmont State secured its sole point with a victory at the No. 4 singles match.
Slippery Rock secured the doubles point with wins across all three courts. The duo of Amaia Balaguer Brau and Tina Slovak delivered a 6-2 victory over
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar at No. 2 doubles, marking the first completed match. At No. 1 doubles, Alissia Kivi and Nicole Kempton, ranked No. 26, defeated
Lara Smith and
Hope Backx, 6-3. The doubles competition concluded with Dari Sakhanova and Nadia Rodewald defeating
Alara Akgul and
Laura Maciel, 6-1, at No. 3 doubles.
In singles play, Slippery Rock extended its lead quickly. Kivi clinched a win at No. 2 singles with a 6-2, 6-0 result over Backx. Balaguer Brau followed with a straight-set victory at No. 1 singles, besting Fonseca, 6-3, 6-1. At No. 5 singles, Sakhanova defeated Maciel, 6-2, 6-2, further increasing the lead.
The match was clinched for Slippery Rock at No. 6 singles when Rodewald overcame Akgul in a close contest, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9). The Falcons' lone point came from Smith at No. 4 singles, where she defeated Slovak, 6-3, 7-5. Kempton secured the final point for Slippery Rock at No. 3 singles, narrowly edging out Gopar, 7-6, 6-4, concluding the dual with a final score of 6-1.
Fairmont State will make the trek south to open conference play on Tuesday, March 31 to face West Virginia Wesleyan College. Start time is set for 3:00 p.m.
