WHEELING, W.Va. – The Fairmont State University women's basketball team faced Concord University in the Mountain East Conference Quarterfinals. The Falcons were able to pull off a close win over the Moutain Lions, 58-56. The Falcons forced 32 turnovers and turned them into 26 points for the victory.
After Concord scored the opening basket,
Haylen Cook put Fairmont State on the board with a three. The two squads went back-and-forth over the next several minutes until
Gabby Reep completed three-point play to give the Falcons a 13-10 lead with 4:23 to go in the first. Fairmont State's defense started to pick up the pace and forced four turnovers that led the way for the team to take a 19-15 advantage going into the second period.
As the second period commenced, the two squads traded baskets until the Mountain Lions scored on back-to-back plays to even the score at 21.
Zaniya Murray then scored four points on two possessions to hand the team a 25-23 edge with 5:17 remaining. Reep and Cook then scored two layups to stretch the lead out to six (29-23). Concord scored three points but a fastbreak layup by Reep made it a 30-26 game at halftime.
At the half, the Falcons forced 18 turnovers and scored 14 points off them. The team also scored 20 points in paint.
The third period kicked off with see-saw affair continuing with Fairmont State unable to truly expand its lead. By the media timeout, FSU still held the four-point advantage, 36-32. Out of the timeout, the defense picked up their play by forcing four turnovers that led to six points that force a Mountain Lions timeout with the Falcons leading 42-32 with 3:25 to go in the third. Concord then went on a 9-0 run to make it a one-point game but a layup by
Alanna Tate with just 30 seconds to go gave Fairmont State a 44-41 lead going to the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Concord started the fourth with four quick points to take a 45-44 lead, its first since the 2:39-mark of first period. However, the Falcons responded with six consecutive points to go back ahead by five (50-45) with 7:24 to go. The Mountain Lions pulled it within one as the two sides started to match each other's baskets. Under a minute to go, Tate drove the lane and made a reverse layup to put Fairmont State up 58-56. Concord had one more shot a tying the game but were unable to score as the Falcons took the game by the two-point margin.
Gabby Reep finished the game with 18 points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Alanna Tate added 14 points with seven boards.
Haylen Cook finished the game with five points while corralling 10 rebounds. The team forced 32 turnovers and converted them into 26 points.
Fairmont State (20-9) will now face Glenville State University in the MEC Semifinals on Saturday, March 7. Game time will be 12:00 p.m.
