Baseball Splits Final Doubleheader Against Kentucky Wesleyan

OWENSBORO, Ky. — Fairmont State (6-5) split a doubleheader against Kentucky Wesleyan (10-8), securing a decisive 10-3 victory in the first game before falling 12-5 in the second.

Game 1: Fairmont State 10, Kentucky Wesleyan 3

In the second inning, the Falcons broke the game open when Drew Emrich singled and Caleb Cottle followed with a two-run homer. Cameron Moore added a solo homer, bringing the score to 3-0 after two innings. 

In the fourth inning, Fairmont State's offense surged again. Cottle and Brayden Hampton singled, setting up Moore's RBI double. Cole contributed a two-RBI double, and Green added an RBI single, extending the lead to 7-0.

The Falcons continued to build their lead in the fifth inning with Emrich walking and eventually scoring on Moore's RBI double, making it 8-0. TJ Hughes added to the run total with an RBI single. The Panthers got on the board in the bottom of the sixth with a solo home run as the Falcons led by eight (9-1). 

Moore struck again in the seventh with his second solo home run of the game, pushing the score to 10-1. The Panthers managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the Falcons secured a decisive 10-3 victory.

Caden Goodwin pitched 6 innings, allowing 4 hits and 1 earned run, while striking out 5 batters. Isaac Van Meter came in for 1 inning of relief work, surrendering 4 hits and 2 earned runs.

Moore led the team with four hits, including two home runs, while driving in four runs and scoring three times. Cottle contributed with a two-run homer among his two hits, adding a total of two runs and five assists defensively. Reilly Bubb showed patience at the plate with two walks and two stolen bases.

Game 2: Kentucky Wesleyan 12, Fairmont State 5

Fairmont State fell behind early as Kentucky Wesleyan took the lead in the third inning with a solo home run by Liam Hutson. In the fourth inning, Kentucky Wesleyan extended its lead, scoring four runs. Logan Molnar and Hutson contributed with an RBI double and a two-run home run, respectively. The inning concluded with the Panthers leading 5-0. 

In the fifth inning, the Falcons responded with two runs. TJ Hughes singled and later scored on a single by Caleb Cottle, followed by Drew Emrich scoring on a single by Cameron Moore, cutting the deficit to 5-2.

The sixth inning saw Kentucky Wesleyan increase its lead significantly, adding seven runs. Errors and key hits, including an RBI single by Ellis Hurt and a two-RBI double by Davin Yates, contributed to a 12-2 lead. 

Fairmont State scored three runs in the seventh inning. Connor Bailey, Moore, and Kris Sutton each contributed with hits, and Bryont Green added an RBI double. Despite the late rally efforts, the Panthers claimed the game, 12-5.

Green posted three hits, including a double, and recorded an RBI. Sutton contributed with a hit, a run, and an RBI in the game. Moore added two hits, scored once, and drove in a run. Bailey reached base twice with a hit and a walk while scoring a run.

Fairmont State opens conference play on Saturday, March 14 against Glenville State University. Game one of the doubleheader is set for 1:00 p.m.
