MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State (15-19) split a doubleheader against Salem (24-13) at Dale Miller Field, securing a thrilling 4–3 victory in the first game before falling 0-1 in the second.
Game 1: Fairmont State 4, Salem 3 (11 Inn.)
In Game 1, Fairmont State opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning.
Cam Cole singled up the middle and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt.
Cameron Moore followed with a single through the left side, driving in Cole.
Reilly Bubb's sacrifice bunt advanced Moore, and
Bryont Green's sacrifice fly moved Moore to third.
TJ Hughes then singled through the right side, bringing Moore home for a 2–0 lead.
Salem scored twice in the top of the third. Joe Wintermu singled and reached third on Jared Layfie's single and stolen base. Wintermu scored on a passed ball, and Layfie crossed the plate on a wild pitch. Fairmont State and the Tigers were tied at 2 after three innings.
The Tigers took the lead in the fourth inning when Aaron Forbes scored on a groundout following an error and a single. Through four innings, the Tigers led 3–2.
In the seventh inning, Fairmont State tied the game.
Gunner Riley walked and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Cole. Moore struck out, but Bubb's single through the left side allowed Riley to score, leveling the game at 3–3.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th inning. Moore led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt. An intentional walk to Green and a wild pitch put runners in scoring position.
Connor Bailey then hit a sacrifice fly to left field, allowing Moore to score the winning run. The Falcons secured a 4–3 victory over the Tigers.
Caden Goodwin pitched 6 innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 6 batters and issuing 3 walks.
Adam Loucks contributed 1 1/3 innings, surrendering 1 walk, with 11 of his 18 pitches going for strikes.
Luke Emory managed 2/3 inning, striking out 1 but giving up 2 walks.
Anthony Dixon pitched 1 inning, striking out 1 and hitting 1 batter.
Isaac Van Meter closed with 2 innings, striking out 2 and throwing 10 of his 13 pitches for strikes, earning the win to improve to a 2–2 record.
Cameron Moore led the offense in Game 1, scoring two runs and recording two hits.
TJ Hughes contributed with two hits and drove in one run.
Game 2: Salem 1, Fairmont State 0
In Game 2, in the first inning,
Cam Cole singled up the middle, and
Cameron Moore doubled down the left field line, advancing Cole to third. However,
Reilly Bubb grounded into a double play to end the threat, leaving the score tied at 0-0.
Salem took the lead in the third inning. Tyson Shumak singled up the middle and advanced to third after a sacrifice bunt by Max Castro. Shumak then scored on Landon McAlp's sacrifice fly to right center, giving Salem a 1-0 lead through three innings.
The Falcons continued to put runners on base. In the third, Cole singled to left center, and Moore singled to right field, moving Cole to second. Yet, another double play by Bubb thwarted the scoring opportunity, leaving the Falcons trailing 1-0.
Despite additional hits, Fairmont State could not capitalize as the Tigers held on to their one-run lead.
Dylan Travinski delivered a complete game performance for the Falcons in Game 2, pitching 7 innings with 86 pitches, 56 of which were strikes. He allowed only 4 hits and 1 earned run while issuing 1 walk and striking out 5.
Cam Cole posted two hits in Game 2, while
Cameron Moore also recorded two hits and added a double.
Brayden Hampton collected one hit while managing the duties behind the plate.
Fairmont State will venture to Indiana, Pennsylvania on Tuesday, April 14 to face Indiana University of Pa. Game time is set for 2:00 p.m.
