Falcons Host Wheeling in a Conference Doubleheader

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Fairmont State (15-22, 8-10 MEC) suffered two defeats against Wheeling University (29-10, 15-3 MEC) at Dale Miller Field on Friday, losing 15-0 in the first game and 8-0 in the second.

In the first game, Edward Mateo's home run to center field in the first inning put Wheeling ahead, 1-0. Fairmont State failed to score in its half, leaving the score 1-0 after one inning. 

In the second inning, Wheeling University extended its lead with a series of hits. Going to the bottom of the second, the Cardinals led 5-0. 

Wheeling added four runs to its lead in the fourth inning to extend the advantage to nine. The seventh inning saw the Cardinals plate six more runs to take the game by the final of 15-0.

In the second game, Wheeling took control in the second inning, capitalizing on a throwing error and a wild pitch to score three runs. 

In the third inning, Gavin Millians scored on a sacrifice fly by Schulz, extending Wheeling's lead to 4-0. The fourth inning saw the Cardinals add another run, as Jalen Raysor scored on a balk, putting them ahead 5-0. 

Griffin Pickhardt's two-run homer in the fifth inning increased Wheeling's advantage to 7-0. Shaw's sacrifice fly in the sixth added another run, making it 8-0. 

The Falcons managed to get runners on base in the bottom of the seventh but could not convert their opportunities into runs. Wheeling secured an 8-0 victory.

Fairmont State and Wheeling will continue its series on Sunday, April 19 at Dale Miller Field. Game one is set to start at 1:00 p.m. as the team will honor its seniors prior to first pitch.
