WASHINGTON, Pa. — Fairmont State University (14-15, 8-8) faced Point Park University (19-10, 11-5) in a doubleheader on Monday at EQT Park, narrowly falling in both games with scores of 4–3 and 7–6.
Game 1: Point Park 4, Fairmont State 3 (8 Inn.)
In game 1, the Falcons encountered an early deficit as Point Park took the lead in the first inning, with Chris Williams and Felix Rodriguez both walking and advancing on a wild pitch. Olindo Pezzone then singled to left field, driving in both runners for a 2–0 advantage.
The Falcons scored their first run in the sixth inning when
Bryont Green was hit by a pitch and advanced to third on a single by
Drew Emrich.
Maddox Johnston grounded out, allowing Green to score, making it 2–1.
Fairmont State took its first lead in the seventh inning when
Cam Cole doubled, and
Reilly Bubb hit a two-run homer, bringing the score to 3–2.
However, Point Park responded in the bottom half, with Trevor Jones reaching on an error and scoring on a single by Rodriguez, leveling the score at 3–3. The eighth inning proved decisive as Blake Ewing hit a solo home run for Point Park, sealing the 4–3 victory.
Caden Goodwin pitched 6 innings for the Falcons, allowing 5 hits and 2 earned runs while striking out 6 batters.
Cameron Gonzalez relieved Goodwin, pitching 1 inning and giving up 2 runs on 2 hits, including a home run, with 1 strikeout.
Reilly Bubb led the Falcons with a home run and two RBIs, while
Connor Bailey stole two bases and
Cam Cole added a double and scored a run.
Game 2: Point Park 7, Fairmont State 6
In game 2, Fairmont State started strong in the first inning with
Cam Cole singling to left field. He advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a throwing error by the shortstop.
Reilly Bubb reached on the same error, allowing Cole to score. Bubb later scored on another throwing error, and
Bryont Green doubled to bring in
TJ Hughes, making it 3–0.
Point Park quickly responded with Blake Ewing's three-run homer in the bottom of the first, tying the game at 3–3.
In the fourth inning, the Pioneers capitalized on a series of walks and a hit-by-pitch. Trevor Jones stole home, and Felix Gonzalez scored on a walk. A sacrifice fly by Olindo Pezzone brought in another run, giving Point Park a 6–3 lead.
The Falcons mounted a comeback in the fifth inning; Bubb doubled and advanced to third on a flyout, scoring on Hughes' groundout. Green walked, and
Drew Emrich doubled to drive him in.
Maddox Johnston's double brought home Emrich, tying the game at 6–6.
However, the Pioneers reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run by Carlos de la Vega, finalizing the score at 7–6.
Dylan Travinski pitched 3 1/3 innings, allowing six earned runs on four hits, including one home run, while striking out three and walking four.
Anthony Dixon entered as a reliever, pitching 1 2/3 innings, giving up one earned run on two hits with two walks and two strikeouts.
Isaac Van Meter pitched one inning, issuing two walks and recording one strikeout without allowing any hits.
Reilly Bubb scored two runs and added a stolen base in game 2.
Bryont Green contributed with a double, driving in one run and scoring once himself.
Drew Emrich also delivered a double, tallying a run and an RBI to bolster the team's offense, while
Cam Cole recorded two hits and stole a base.
Fairmont State remains on the road on Wednesday, April 8 at Clarion University. Start time is set for 2:00 p.m.
