FROSTBURG, Md. — Fairmont State University (19-28, 12-15) fell to Frostburg State University (33-16, 20-7) in a tightly contested 9–8 loss on Saturday at Bob Wells Field, following an earlier defeat in the first game of the doubleheader where they lost 11-2.
Game 1: Frostburg State 11, Fairmont State 2
In game 1, Fairmont State struck first with an early lead.
Reilly Bubb singled to second base in the first inning, followed by a single from
Cameron Moore that advanced Bubb to second. Moore stole second, advanced to third, and Bubb scored on an error by the catcher, giving the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
However, Frostburg State quickly responded with an RBI single by Jake Holler, tying the game at 1-1 through the first inning. The Bobcats then took the lead in the second inning with a sacrifice fly by Tanner Cunningham, making it 2-1.
Fairmont State equalized in the fourth inning when
TJ Hughes scored on a sacrifice fly by
Adam Loucks, but the Bobcats added two runs that inning, extending their lead to 4-2.
In the fifth inning, Frostburg State exploded for five runs, concluding the inning with a commanding 9-2 advantage.
The sixth inning saw the Bobcats score two additional runs, solidifying their lead at 11-2.
Caden Goodwin started on the mound for the Falcons, pitching 4 innings and allowing 4 earned runs on 4 hits.
Logan Keepers and
Luke Emory appeared in relief. Keepers gave up 4 earned runs in 1 inning on 3 hits and 1 walk, while Emory pitched the final inning, allowing 2 earned runs on 2 hits and striking out 2 batters.
Bubb contributed two hits, including a double, and scored once, while Hughes also recorded two hits and scored a run.
Game 2: Frostburg State 9, Fairmont State 8
In game 2, Frostburg State took an early lead in the first inning, scoring two unearned runs on a sacrifice fly and a throwing error, ending the inning ahead 2–0.
Fairmont State turned the game around in the second inning with a powerful offensive showing, scoring five runs.
Drew Emrich walked and scored on a single by
Connor Bailey, followed by Bubb's two-RBI single.
Bryont Green added two more runs with a single, putting the Falcons ahead 5–2. However, the Bobcats answered back with three runs to tie the game at 5–5.
The Falcons regained the lead in the fourth inning with two more runs as
Gunner Riley walked and scored on a double by Moore, who later scored on a passed ball, making it 7–5.
The sixth inning saw Green drive in Moore with a single, extending the Falcons' lead to 8–5. Yet, Frostburg State tied the game once again at 8–8 with three runs, capitalizing on a wild pitch and an error.
In a dramatic finish, Tanner Cunningham hit a solo home run in the seventh inning, sealing a 9–8 victory for Frostburg State.
Dylan Travinski started on the mound for the Falcons, pitching 5 2/3 innings and allowing six earned runs on six hits, while
Isaac Van Meter came in for relief, pitching 2/3 of an inning and giving up one earned run.
Green led the team with three hits and three RBIs in the second game. Moore scored twice, adding a double and an RBI, while Bubb recorded two RBIs and Riley drew two walks, crossing home plate twice.
Fairmont State finishes the season with a record of 19-29 while going 12-16 in conference play.
