WEXFORD, Pa. — Fairmont State defeated West Virginia Wesleyan 4-1 in the first round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday.
Fairmont State seized the doubles point decisively with victories across all courts. The No. 2 doubles team of
Maria Fonseca and
Stephanie Gopar opened the scoring with a swift 6-1 win against Andrea Garrido and Emilie Bergmann.
Following closely,
Laura Maciel and
Alara Akgul at No. 3 doubles secured a 6-1 triumph over Sneha Sundaraneedi and Yuko Sakurai. The No. 1 doubles match concluded with
Lara Smith and
Hope Backx claiming a 7-5 victory over Dominique van Vuuren and Renata Pozzobon, cementing the doubles sweep.
In singles play, the Falcons extended their lead when
Maria Fonseca at No. 1 singles delivered a 6-3, 6-3 win over Dominique van Vuuren.
Hope Backx contributed further at No. 2 singles, defeating Daria Godlewska 6-2, 7-5. The Bobcats picked up a point at No. 3 singles as Renata Pozzobon overcame
Stephanie Gopar, 6-1, 6-4.
Alara Akgul closed out the match for the Falcons with a 7-5, 6-2 victory over Emilie Bergmann at No. 6 singles, clinching the dual match. The overall final score was 5-1 in favor of Fairmont State, concluding the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
Fairmont State Univeristy advances and will face the top-seed, Slippery Rock University on Saturday, May 9. The match from Slippery Rock, Pennsylvania is set to start at 2:00 p.m.
