DAYTON, Ohio — Fairmont State (0-1) fell to Division I, the University of Dayton (1-0) with a final score of 43-20 on Saturday at Welcome Stadium. The Falcons scored three touchdowns, including a 44-yard pass, but were unable to overcome the Flyers' strong performance in the second quarter.
Fairmont State began the first quarter by deferring the kickoff, allowing Dayton to start with possession. The defense made an immediate impact with
Demarcus Daniels breaking up a pass, leading to a quick punt. On Fairmont State's first offensive drive,
Nino Marzullo connected with
Joshua Jones for a short gain, but the drive stalled, resulting in a punt.
Dayton capitalized on its following drive, advancing 90 yards over 10 plays and culminating in a touchdown pass, putting Fairmont State down 7-0. With time winding down in the quarter, Marzullo led a response, completing a 24-yard pass to
Breon Hardnett. Despite advancing into Dayton territory, the drive ended in a punt, closing the quarter with Fairmont State trailing 7-0.
The second quarter began with a pivotal shift as the Falcons' drive was halted by an interception from Joe Kingsbury. Dayton capitalized on the turnover, completing a scoring drive with a 33-yard touchdown run by Luke Hansen, extending its lead.
Fairmont State struggled to regain momentum, with another turnover occurring when Javawn Brooks intercepted a pass and returned it deep into Fairmont State territory, resulting in another Flyers touchdown. Despite sporadic gains, such as a 15-yard rush by Jones, the Falcons faced challenges converting drives into points. Dayton further solidified its lead with a 39-yard touchdown pass and a late field goal, closing the period with a 38-0 advantage.
Fairmont State began the third quarter with a strong offensive push, taking advantage of a pass interference call to move into Dayton territory. Jones capitalized on the momentum, rushing for a 25-yard gain followed by a 26-yard touchdown run, narrowing the gap.
Emmanuel Richardson's successful extra point made the score 38-7 in favor of Dayton.
Dayton responded with a methodical drive, resulting in a 33-yard field goal by David Maurer, extending its lead to 41-7. Fairmont State then faced challenges on their subsequent drive, with Marzullo being sacked twice, forcing a punt.
In a defensive highlight,
Gavin Smith intercepted a pass from Dayton's Luke Pennington, giving Fairmont State another opportunity. However, the quarter closed with the Falcons still trailing 41-7 after an interception by Parker Chaney ended their offensive drive.
The fourth quarter began with Fairmont State taking advantage of a turnover on downs after Smith broke up a deep pass attempt on third down. Jones sparked the offense with a notable 51-yard rush, though it was partially negated by a penalty. Despite a series of short gains, the drive ended on a turnover on downs at the Dayton 47-yard line.
Dayton's subsequent drive was stifled by a loss of yardage on a fourth-down rush by Pennington, thanks to a tackle for loss by Daniels. The Falcons capitalized on the defensive stop with an effective drive, highlighted by a 23-yard pass from
Deven Sisler to
Jules Alvarado and a 29-yard touchdown pass to

After a blocked extra point attempt was returned for two points by Dayton, the Falcons mounted another scoring drive late in the quarter. Sisler connected with

Jones led the offensive effort with 108 rushing yards on 11 carries, including one touchdown. Quarterback Sisler completed 6 of 9 passes for 111 yards, adding two touchdowns through the air. On the receiving end, Michael contributed with two catches for 21 yards and a touchdown. On defense,
Jeffery Polk finished with 14 total tackles, while Smith added an interception to his five tackles.
Fairmont State will open the home portion of the schedule on Thursday, September 3 against Bloomsburg University. Kickoff from Duvall-Rosier Field is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
