FAIRMONT, W.Va. — The 16th-ranked Fairmont State women's soccer team (7-0-2, 5-0-2) tied West Virginia State (3-2-4, 3-1-3) 1-1 on Sunday at Duvall-Rosier Field. Both teams scored once in the first half, and neither side broke through after halftime. The Falcons finished with a 15-10 advantage in shots, including 10 attempts in the second half, and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
The Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when
Addison Castaneda scored off an assist from
Elisa Dinaldo. Early in the first half,
Serenity Thomas had the first Falcons shot just over two minutes in, and the Falcons built more pressure around the 19th minute with a Thomas shot saved by Celina Seggelmann and a
Valentina Gianinetto attempt that went high.
The Falcons added a second corner in the 33rd minute, but the Yellow Jackets answered with Rachel Okoro's goal from Sara París Fílter in the 39th minute to tie the match.
Olivia Johnston made a save on Hannah Aneley Nuñez Perreira in the 41st minute, and the Falcons went into halftime tied 1-1 after both teams finished the half with five shots.
The Falcons kept the match level through a scoreless second half and made a late push, including
Sam Yuen's shot off the top woodwork in the 88th minute after a Falcons corner. At the beginning of the second half, the Falcons created several looks in the opening stretch, with Yuen shooting high,
Lyndy Van Horn forcing a save from Celina Seggelmann, and
Braylyn Sparks and
Arrington Sparks adding attempts around a 54th-minute corner.
The Yellow Jackets answered with a cluster of chances before the hour mark and later earned an 81st-minute corner, but the Falcons kept the visitors off the board in the half. The Falcons closed with shots from
Dahlia Welter, Yuen and
Payton Parliament over the final five minutes, and the match finished tied 1-1.
Castaneda scored the Falcons' goal, putting her lone shot on frame and finishing with two points. Dinaldo recorded the assist for her point.
Fairmont State welcomes MEC newcomer, Shawnee State on Wednesday, September 30 to Duvall-Rosier Field. The match is scheduled to start at 3:00 p.m.
