Kyle Hoffman, a two-time Mountain East Conference men’s tennis coach of the year, returns for his third season leading the FSU program.
In his first season at Fairmont State, Hoffman helped the Falcons to eight wins -- the most for the program in over a decade. FSU also won three matches in MEC play and earned the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament.
He followed up that season by leading the Falcons to their first-ever Mountain East Conference regular season title, their first conference championship since 1989. The 17-win season was one win shy of the school record set in 1986 when the Falcons went 18-1.
Hoffman is the first FSU men's tennis coach to earn coach of the year honors since Bill Haines was named WVIAC Coach of the Year following the 1990 season. He is also the first Fairmont State coach to earn coach of the year honors since the league joined the MEC in 2013.
Hoffman also received his Master of Tennis Junior Development certification on April 18, 2016 from the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR). This two year program consists of 18 different competence based courses designed to help coaches gain the behaviors, knowledge and skills needed to develop high quality programs that encourage and enable young players to participate in tennis.
FSU senior Micah Hornak led the Falcons in 2015-16 at No. 1 singles and doubles, becoming the first FSU men's tennis athlete to be named first team all-conference since Fabien Mevs in 2010-11.
FSU freshmen Lucas Alves led the Falcons in 2016-17 by grabbing the MEC Freshmen of the Year award after a 17 win season at #1 singles. The freshman also earned first team all-conference honors along with senior Micah Hornak. Freshmen Gui Pachane snagged MEC second team honors to help the Falcons snag a share of the regular season title.
In addition to being the head men's tennis coach at Fairmont State, Hoffman is currently the Community Program Manager (WV) for USTA Mid-Atlantic, where he administers tennis services to the second largest territory in the Mid-Atlantic. Since 2011, Hoffman has increased individual membership in his territory by 237% and organizational membership by 873% as a tennis service representative, and under his new role has created after-school opportunities to over 1,000 kids in the state.
Hoffman has also implemented or assisted with over 275 new programs, highlighted by the WV Grand Prix (450+ players per year), Mini-Mountaineer KTC's (450+ kids), TGA after-school tennis programs (700+ kids), 50+ play days and helped bring the first pro event to West Virginia in over 85 years.
As the Tennis Director for several local parks, he created a parks and recreation program and is the decision maker for four county parks with over 150 kids and 100 adults. Hoffman runs the largest adult league program in the WV Mid-Atlantic region, which was recently relocating this past summer to Fairmont State from it’s home at East Marion Park.
Hoffman received his Master's Degree in Business Administration and Bachelor's Degree in Business Management from West Virginia Wesleyan College, where he was a standout on the tennis courts for the Bobcats.
Hoffman finished his college tennis career with over 50 wins in singles and doubles competition and suffered fewer than 10 losses in his career. During his four-year career, he helped the Bobcats to a pair of conference semifinal and finals appearances. He was also part of two teams that were ranked in the top 40 nationally in NCAA Division II.
As a walk-on to the men's tennis team, he was a two-year starter and earned Most Improved Player following his junior season and was named team MVP following his senior season. Hoffman only lost one singles match and two doubles matches during his junior year.
Hoffman was also named the 2014 Professional Tennis Registry Member of the Year for the state of West Virginia after organizing one of the first 11-17 PTR workshops in the country in November of 2013. Hoffman currently holds certifications with PTR for 10 and under, 11-17, adults and has a Master’s of Tennis in Junior Development.
