Greg Evans begins his seventh season coaching the Fairmont State softball program.
Evans joined the Fairmont State softball coaching staff as a volunteer in the fall of 2016 and was named a paid assistant coach in 2019. He coached Hannah Absalom, who become an All-Mountain East Conference and Second Team All-Atlantic region pitcher in 2019. Absalom posted a 1.31 era. during that season.
He coached the Fairmont State pitching staff of six pitchers to a 2.09-team ERA in the 2021 season, which ranked 21st in Division II softball.
Evans was named interim head coach of Fairmont State softball on March 28, 2022. During Evans’ time as interim head coach, he guided the softball team in winning the MEC Tournament Championship, which was the first in Fairmont State history. The Falcons ran the table in the tournament, posting a 4-0 record in the tournament. Caitlyn Kassay, Emily Riggs and Peyton Wetherholt were named to the all-tournament team, with Riggs voted as the Most Valuable Player. With the tournament championship, Fairmont State competed in the Division II Softball Atlantic Regional Tournament and defeated Mercyhurst 8-3 in an elimination game.
Before Fairmont State, Evans was a wrestling coach at Northwestern High School for 38 years and worked as a volunteer softball coach as a pitching and catching coach. Evans has two daughters that pitched softball and graduated from, The US Military Academy at West Point. One of his daughters pitched against olympian Cat Osterman of Texas in a regional playoff game in Oklahoma.
Evans resides with his wife Debb near Edinboro, Pa.
