Lohr Drains Seven Three-Pointers To Lead FSU Past Fayetteville State

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- The Fairmont State women's basketball team opened the 2014-15 season with a 63-50 victory over Fayetteville State on Friday afternoon on the opening day of the MEC/CIAA Challenge. Emily Lohr drained 7-of-7 three-point attempts to lead the Falcons with 21 points.

The game was the first in the newly-renovated Joe Retton Arena that was unveiled to FSU fans for the first time on Friday.

Both teams shot under 40 percent from the floor, with the Falcons holding the advantage at 37.7 percent. FSU shot 11-of-34 from behind the arc, compared to just 1-of-7 for the Broncos of Fayetteville State. The Falcons also had 19 assists on 23 made field goals on the afternoon.

Joining Lohr in double figures was Hallie Gunnoe with 18 points (8-of-17) and 11 rebounds to record a double-double. Emily Puskarich chipped in six points, seven rebounds and eight assists to fill the stat sheet.

Doreen Richardson had a team-high 18 points to lead the Broncos. Deja Middleton recorded 15 points and 16 rebounds to lead Fayetteville State in the paint. The Broncos held a 36-20 advantage scoring in the paint and out-rebounded the Falcons 42-37 in the game.

The Falcons will look to open the season with a 2-0 record when they wrap up the MEC/CIAA Challenge against Shaw on Saturday at 4 p.m.
