FSU Opens MEC Play With 66-57 Victory At WVWC

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State opened Mountain East Conference play with a 66-57 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon in Buckhannon.

With the victory, the Falcons improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the MEC while the Bobcats fell to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the league.

Nick Harney led the Falcons with 21 points and seven rebounds after knocking down 10-of-16 field goals in the victory. Brandon Vega also reached double-figures with 14 and a team-high five assists. Vega scored all of his 14 points in the second half.

FSU shot 42 percent from the floor and scored nearly half of its points in the paint. WVWC held a 42-36 advantage on the glass and shot 41 percent in the second half after managing just 27 percent in the opening half. Both teams made 18-of-24 free throw attempts in the game.

Wesleyan got a game-high 13 points and 13 rebounds from Tanner McGrew in the game. McGrew went 7-of-8 from the free throw line. Taylor Price (11) and Chris Dewberry (10) also reached double-figures.

Fairmont State grabbed an eight-point advantage at the 3:59 mark after a jumper by Shammgod Wells but a three by Anthony Richards and a layup by Price made the halftime margin just three for the Falcons. FSU missed their final four field goals of the opening half.

At the 14:12 mark of the second half with the Falcons leading 33-32, Fairmont State went on a 12-0 run over a three-minute stretch to grab a 45-32 lead. Vega scored seven points and Caleb Davis had two field goals to key the run for the Falcons. FSU pushed its lead to as many as 15 on two occasions before settling for the 66-57 victory.

FSU will play rival Glenville State on Monday night in a Mountain East Conference showdown on Monday evening starting at 7:30 p.m.
