BUCKHANNON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State held off a late push by West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon to improve to 5-0 (1-0 MEC) on the season.
Hallie Gunnoe (17 points, 10 rebounds) and
Emily Lohr (17 points, 14 rebounds) each recorded double-doubles for the Falcons in the victory while
Amanda Ruffner came off the bench to chip in 16 points and eight boards.
Mari Stewart led WV Wesleyan (0-3, 0-1 MEC) with 14 points and 14 rebounds in the loss. Kiki DeVane also recorded a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds despite being held to just 4-of-13 from the field. Adrian Cunningham also reached double-figures with 13 points.
FSU out-shot Wesleyan, 41 percent to 31 percent in the game and held an eight-point advantage in the paint. The Falcons also pulled down 12 more rebounds in the victory. The Bobcats forced 26 turnovers to stay within striking distance for most of the afternoon.
Ruffner scored 10 points and pulled down five rebounds when the FSU post players faced foul trouble in the opening half of the game. WVWC also made just 23 percent of their field goal attempts in the first half to allow Fairmont State to go to the locker room with a 31-24 lead.
Early in the second half, the Falcons pushed their lead to as many as 14 points at the 16:42 mark.
Emily Puskarich hit a pair of three-pointers and Gunnoe scored five points during the stretch for FSU.
With Fairmont State still holding an 11-point advantage at the 13 minute mark, Wesleyan went on a 9-0 run over the next three minutes to cut the FSU advantage to a single field goal (45-43). The final nine minutes of the game stayed close with FSU leading by as many as four the rest of the way.
Allyson Freiermuth cut the lead to one point with 46 second remaining but
Emily Lohr responded for the Falcons at the other end with a layup of her own to push the lead back to 59-56 with 23 seconds remaining in regulation. However, Stacey Remer hit her only three-point attempt of the game with four seconds remaining and sent the game into overtime with a 59-59 tie.
In overtime, the Falcons grabbed a four-point lead early on a layup by Ruffner and continued to push their lead back to two possessions every time the Bobcats answered. On the final two Bobcat possessions, the Falcons held Wesleyan scoreless and capitalized at the free throw line to push the final score to 74-67.
The Falcons will host the defending MEC Champions, Glenville State, on Monday evening at 5:30 p.m.
