LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Fairmont State was limited to just 28.1 percent from the field and 12.5 percent from behind the arc in a 75-55 loss to No. 7 Bellarmine University on Saturday afternoon in Louisville.
Saturday was the lowest offensive output for Fairmont State since January 23, 2012 when the Falcons fell at West Virginia Wesleyan, 70-53. That loss is also the last time FSU shot under 30 percent from the field before today's game.
The loss drops FSU to 5-5 overall and wraps up the non-conference portion of the schedule with a 3-3 mark. Nationally-ranked Bellarmine improves to 8-1 on the season with the victory.
The Falcons made just 18 field goals and 3-of-24 attempts from behind the arc on the afternoon. FSU also had just nine assists and turned the ball over 21 times, compared to 14 turnovers for BU. FSU held a 48-37 advantage on the glass, including 20 offensive rebounds.
Bellarmine went 26-of-56 (46.4%) from the field and tallied 17 assists in the victory. BU also hald a 40-26 advantage scoring in the paint and scored 18 points off turnovers (14 fast break points). The Knights led by as many as 31 points at the 4:47 mark of the second half before the Falcons trimmed the final margin to 75-55.
Jamel Morris was the lone FSU player to reach double figures with 12 points on the afternoon.
Shammgod Wells chipped in nine points, all of which came at the foul line, and six assists for the Falcons.
Thomas Wimbush added seven points and a team-high eight rebounds.
Bellarmine used a balanced offensive attack, getting 16 points from Rusty Troutman, 15 from Chris Whitehead and 14 from Jake Thelen. Thelen also had a team-high seven boards and was one of three BU players with four assists.
