Falcons Hold Off Blue Knights, 76-73

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State held off a furious rally by Urbana in the closing minutes to pick up a 76-73 victory on Saturday evening at Joe Retton Arena to open 2015.

After a three-pointer by Mike Newton with 4:30 remaining in the game to cut the FSU advantage to just a single point (70-69), Shammgod Wells responded with a three at the opposite end to push the FSU lead back to four. However, a tip-in by John Summers after a missed Urbana three made the score 73-71 with just over two minutes to play.

The team's once again traded backets on the next two possessions and the game entered the final minute with FSU holding a 75-73 lead. On the next possession the Falcons attempted a wide open three that fell short and Summers had a chance to give the Blue Knights the lead late, but the three missed and Urbana was forced to foul.

After Wells' free throw missed, Thomas Wimbush grabbed an offensive board and went 1-of-2 from the line after being fouled again by UU. The Blue Knights got a desperation three late but it was no good and FSU wrapped up the 76-73 victory.
