FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Three players turned in 20-point performances as Fairmont State rolled past Notre Dame College, 90-72, on Monday evening in MEC action at Joe Retton Arena.
Thomas Wimbush (22),
Jamel Morris (22) and
Nick Harney (21) led FSU offensive in the victory. Morris went 8-of-12 from the field and 6-of-8 from behind the arc and also added four rebounds and five assists to his 22 points. Wimbush went 10-of-14 from the field and pulled down a team-high eight boards to go along with his 22 points while Harney scored 10 of Fairmont State's first 12 points and went 9-of-10 from the free throw line.
Caleb Davis was the fourth FSU player to reach double figures with 11 points while
Shammgod Wells passed out a team-best six assists.
Fairmont State (7-5, 4-2 MEC) shot 54 percent from the field and knocked down 8-of-20 three-pointers and 16-of-20 foul shots in the win. FSU also limited its turnovers to just seven in the game, zero of which came in the opening 20 minutes. In addition to having just seven turnovers, Fairmont State also had 20 assists and 10 steals in the victory. Notre Dame turned the ball over 18 times and FSU scored 30 points at the opposite end.
Notre Dame College (7-5, 3-3 MEC) was led by Tyree Gaiter with a game-high 25 points after going 9-of-13 from the field. Lawrence DeArmond was held 10 points under his season average, finishing with 13 points, while Najeeb Johnson chipped in 11 for NDC.
Notre Dame also shot over 50 percent from the floor, knocking down 27-of-52 field goal attempts (51.9) and held a 31-27 advantage in rebounding.
FSU broke open a close game at the 12:38 mark of the opening half (19-15) by going on a 18-7 run over a five minute stretch and grabbed a 15-point advantage. FSU continued to add to its advantage later in the game, leading by as many as 18 (4:09) in the opening half and as many as 27 in the second half at the 4:32 mark before wrapping up the 90-72 vicotry.
Fairmont State will travel to Wheeling Jesuit on Thursday evening for a 7:30 p.m. tip against the Cardinals.
