FSU Downs Charleston In MEC Showdown, 93-88

CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State closed out the University of Charleston, 93-88, in an entertaining Mountain East Conference showdown on Saturday afternoon at the Eddie King Gymnasium.

With the victory, FSU took over sole possession of third place in the MEC standing with an overall record of 12-6 and a 9-3 mark in conference action. UC slips to 13-5 overall and 8-4 in the MEC.

Chase Morgan came off the bench to lead the Falcons with 20 points, including 12-of-13 from the free throw line. Shammgod Wells chipped in 19 points and a team-best four assists while Jamel Morris scored 17. Nick Harney recorded a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards and Caleb Davis was the fifth FSU player to reach double figures with 12.

Cameron Dozier led the Golden Eagles with a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds in the close loss. Chris Evans (23), Tino DiTrapano (15) and Vincent Dillard (14) also reached double figures for UC. DiTrapano passed out eight assists to lead the Golden Eagle offense. Aleksander Kesic, who scored 16 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the meeting at Fairmont, was held scoreless and had just two rebounds and three assists for Charleston this afternoon.

FSU shot 48 percent in the second half and 45 percent in the game and went 34-of-39 (87%) from the free throw line in the victory. Charleston shot over 50 percent from the field but struggled from the free throw line, making just 22-of-32 attempts. UC also held a 32-30 advantage on the glass but committed two more turnovers than the Falcons (13-11).

The teams combined for 19 three-pointers, with UC draining 10 and FSU with nine. There was also 53 fouls called on the evening as both teams played very aggressive defensively.

The Falcons will now be idle until Thursday evening when WV State visits Joe Retton Arena. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
