FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State dominated the paint in the opening half and took control of West Virginia State midway through the second half to pick up a 92-75 victory on Thursday night at Joe Retton Arena.
Nick Harney and
Thomas Wimbush each scored 24 points to lead the Falcons in the victory. Harney scored 18 of his 24 points in the opening half and also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the victory. Wimbush went 6-of-11 from the field and knocked down 9-of-10 free throws to go along with six boards in the game.
Shammgod Wells (13) and
Jamel Morris (11) also reached double figures.
Trevor Andrews-Evans recorded five rebounds and four blocked shots.
The Falcons shot 48.4 percent (31-of-64) from the field and drilled ten three-pointers. FSU struggled from the free throw line, making just 20-of-31 attempts. WVSU shot just 41 percent from the field and turned the ball over 19 times.
FSU dominated the specialty stats, scoring 43 points in the paint, 24 points off turnovers and 15 points on the fast break. WV State had 19 second chance points and scored 44 bench points.
Dominic Phillips led WVSU off the bench with 17 points in the loss. Tyrie Elliott also scored 15 points off the bench and Damion Harris chipped in 14 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
With FSU holding just a three-point lead at the 13:06 mark of the second half, the Falcons went on a 26-6 run over a six-minute stretch to pull away from the Yellow Jackets and take control of the game. Fairmont State knocked down four three-pointers during the stretch, two of which coming from Wimbush.
After just 13 combined fouls in the opening half, the teams were whistled for 35 in the second half.
The Falcons will return to action on Saturday when West Virginia Wesleyan visits Joe Retton Arena for a 4 p.m. tip.
