FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State rallied late in the second half and outscored West Virginia Wesleyan, 15-5, in overtime to pick up the 86-76 victory on Saturday evening at Joe Retton Arena.
With the victory, FSU improved to 14-6 overall and 11-3 in the Mountain East Conference while the Bobcats slip to 8-12 overall and 6-8 in the league.
Nick Harney recorded his fourth, 20-point scoring performance in the last five games by scoring 25 points and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds in the victory. Harney scored four points in the final minute of regulation to send the game into overtime.
Jamel Morris was 6-of-9 from behind the arc and chipped in 24 points for the Falcons.
Shammgod Wells also turned in one of his better performances of the season with 17 points, five rebounds and five assists despite getting banged up in overtime and later returning to the lineup.
Tanner McGrew scored a game-high 26 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to record a double-double for the Bobcats. Garrett Grantham chipped in 19 points and seven assists for WVWC, shooting 6-of-10 from the field. Anthony Richards (11) and Austin Shell (10) also reached double figures for the Bobcats. Shell was 4-of-4 from the field and also pulled down five boards.
Wesleyan shot 51.9 percent from the floor and took its first lead of the second half (64-63) with 1:28 remaining after a dunk by McGrew that was set up by Grantham. After a turnover by the Falcons at the opposite end, the Bobcats took a three-point lead in transition when Grantham went coast-to-coast for the layup. Wells answerd with a quick layup for the Falcons to cut the WVWC lead to 66-65 with one minute remaining.
On the defensive end, Richards was fouled on the drive and knocked down a pair from the line to answer the Falcons and put the 'Cats back up by three. With 22 seconds remaining, Harney went to the basket for the score and Wesleyan's lead was trimmed to just one yet again. After another foul defensively, Grantham went 1-of-2 from the line and the Falcons had the opportunity to tie or win with a three. Harney once again put the game in his hands and went to the basket for the tying layup with seven seconds remaining. The Bobcats turned the ball over just three seconds later and FSU regained possession with four seconds remaining but Harney's layup rolled out and the game went into overtime, tied 71-71.
Wesleyan took the lead on the first possession of overtime with a jumper from the top of the paint but over the next three and a half minutes, FSU jumped ahead by six after a layup by
Caleb Davis and going 6-of-8 from the free throw line during the stretch. Grantham stopped the bleeding for the Bobcats by nailing a three with 1:23 remaining to make the score 79-76 in favor of the Falcons. Grantham's three was the last score of the game for WV Wesleyan, however, as
Jamel Morris drained a three and Wells went 4-of-4 from the line down the stretch to wrap up the 86-76 win for the Falcons.
Fairmont State forced 23 WVWC turnovers and nailed 8-of-15 three-pointers in the victory. FSU also had 15 second-chance points compared to just six for Wesleyan and the Falcons hald a 42-36 advantage scoring in the paint. The Falcons shot 44 percent from the field.
FSU will travel to the Waco Center on Monday for a pivitol MEC matchup with Glenville State. Tip is set for 7:30 p.m.
