Falcons Get Past Bobcats, 62-53

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State got past West Virginia Wesleyan, 62-53, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena to improve to 16-4 overall and 10-4 in the Mountain East Conference.

The teams combined for 54 turnovers in the game and both struggled from the field, with FSU shooting 41.8 percent (23-55) and WVWC making just 39.2 percent (39.2) of it field goals. FSU also made just 2-of-9 from behind the arc but dominated the paint with a 32-18 scoring margin down low. In addition, FSU held a 36-33 rebounding advantage.

Fairmont State was led by Hailey Garrett with 25 points and eight rebounds in the victory. With Garrett's 25 points, she passed Ashley Vavrek to move into seventh-place in school history in career scoring. Emily Lohr also chipped in 14 points and eight boards and Hallie Gunnoe racked up 14 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists.

West Virginia Wesleyan (2-15, 2-12 MEC) was led by Mari Stewart with 21 points, four rebounds and five steals. Adrian Cunningham also reached double figures with 10 points for the Bobcats. Kiki DeVane pulled down a team-best eight rebounds to go along with seven points.

Fairmont State held a 22-8 margin in the paint in the opening half and forced 18 turnovers to help build a 32-25 halftime advantage. Gunnoe scored 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting in the first half, including knocking down 2-of-3 from behind the arc.

The Falcons pushed their lead to 15 (48-33) at the 13:15 mark of the second half before the Bobcats went on an 18-4 run over a nine minute stretch to cut the FSU lead to just a single point at 52-51 with 3:47 remaining. However, Wesleyan did not score a field goal in the final 4:27 of the game and Garrett scored eight of Fairmont's final 10 points to allow FSU to wrap up the 62-53 victory.

FSU will return to action on Monday evening in a key MEC rematch with the Pioneers of Glenville State. Tip is set for 5:30 p.m. at the Waco Center.
