CHARLESTON, W.Va. -- Fairmont State recorded a .256 attacking percentage and had 16 kills in the fourth set to wrap up a 3-1 victory over Charleston on Friday evening at the CCHS Athletic Complex. Standout right-side hitter
Mackenzie Harrison recorded seven kills and had a .455 attacking percentage in the fourth set to lead the Falcons.
With the win, the Falcons have now won 10 of their last 11 and have an overall record of 14-6 and a 6-1 mark in Mountain East Conference matchups. Charleston slips to 9-8 overall and 5-2 in the league.
Harrison led the Falcons in the match with 16 kills and two block assists in the victory.
Erin Harwood (13 kills, 16 digs) and
Jessica Furda (42 assists, 17 digs) both recorded double-doubles for the Falcons. Senior
Kaitlyn Witsaman just missed a double-double with 12 kills and nine digs while
Kayla Smith added 11 digs defensively.
Mia Herrod led the Golden Eagles with 13 kills and five total blocks in the match. Jordan Wittekind also reached double-figure kills with 10 for UC. Shiann White chipped in a team-high 22 digs and Melissa Reyes notched 17 assists to lead the Golden Eagles attack.
The Falcons picked up 25-22 and 25-20 victories in the first two sets to grab an early advantage in the match. Charleston forced a fourth set by winning 25-19 in the third. Despite the loss, UC had a 12-3 advantage in blocks and had a higher attacking percentage in the match. FSU held an 8-5 margin in aces.
The Falcons will remain in Charleston for a 1 p.m. match against the Yellow Jackets of West Virginia State on Saturday.
