FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State made 11 three-pointers and shot 68 percent from the floor in the second half to run away from Lincoln (PA) on Friday night at Joe Retton Arena on the opening day of the 2015 Joe Retton Classic.
The Falcons were led by transfers
Matt Bingaya and
Chase Connor with 20 points apiece in the win. Connor went 6-of-11 from three and also had a team-high three steals in the victory. Bingaya scored all of his 20 points in the second half of the game, going 9-of-11 from the field and also pulling down nine rebounds and passing out five assists.
Caleb Davis (12),
Jamel Morris (11) and
Jason Jolly (10) also reached double-figures for the Falcons.
Fairmont State shot 37-of-68 (54.4%) from the field in the game, including going 11-of-29 from behind the arc. The Falcons missed just 10 shots in the second half and shot 68.8 percent (22-of-32) from the field to stretch their 10-point halftime lead to as many as 32 late in the second half.
FSU also held a 46-34 advantage in the paint and scored 25 points off 18 LU turnovers. The Falcons committed just eight turnovers in the win. In addition, FSU held a 16-8 advantage in transition points and recorded 22 assists.
Lincoln also shot over 50 percent from the field and was led by Blair Davis with 12 points after going 5-of-5 from the field. Joshua Davis and Vernon Young also reached double-figures for the Lions with 10 points apiece.
The Falcons will wrap up the 2015 Joe Retton Classic on Saturday evening when they host Shaw University at 7 p.m. In the early game on day one of the Classic, West Virginia Wesleyan picked up an 85-82 win over Shaw. Wesleyan will face Lincoln (PA) on Saturday at 5 p.m. at Joe Retton Arena.
