Strong Second Half Lifts FSU Past ABU, 80-62

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Fairmont State outscored Alderson Broaddus, 45-29, in the second half by shooting 60 percent from the field as the Falcons ran away with an 80-62 victory over the Battlers on Tuesday evening at Joe Retton Arena in their 2015 home opener.
 
Fairmont State (3-0) was once again led by 20-point scoring performance from Katie Nunan and Amanda Ruffner in the post. Nunan finished the day with 23 points on 10-of-21 shooting and also passed out four assists and recorded a steal. Ruffner chipped in 21 points, five rebounds and three assists and shot 9-of-10 from the field. Deidra Combs was one rebound away from recording a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and three steals for the Falcons. Emily Puskarich also chipped in 10 points and Makenzie White added nine to help the Falcons pick up the win.
 
The Falcons shot 54.4 percent from the field and held a 44-28 advantage in the paint. ABU committed 20 fouls in the game and FSU took advantage by nailing 13-of-16 attempts from the foul line (81.3%).
 
In the first half, the game was tied five times and there were seven lead changes before the Falcons took control of the game in the second half. The Battlers led by as many as 10 points in the first quarter at the 1:45 mark after a layup by Rachel Ashley.
 
After committing 13 first-half turnovers, the Falcons totaled just six in the second half.
 
ABU (0-3) was led by Ashely and Lorin Clark with 10 points apiece in the loss. Sydney Shaffer and Haley Robb also chipped in nine points apiece for the Battlers. ABU held a 25-17 advantage in points off turnovers, including 17 of those in the opening half.
 
FSU will host West Virginia Wesleyan in the Mountain East Conference opener on Saturday afternoon starting at 2 p.m.
