FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Amanda Ruffner recorded her fourth-straight, 20-point performance to lead Fairmont State to a 79-69 victory over West Virginia Wesleyan on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena in the conference opener for both teams.
With the win, the Falcons remain unbeaten at 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Mountain East Conference. WVWC falls to 0-2 overall and 0-1 in the league.
Ruffner finished the afternoon with 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting and also pulled down eight rebounds.
Kelli Jo Harrison also chipped in 12 points and six rebounds and
Katie Nunan added 10 points and six boards as the Falcons dominated the paint. FSU finished the game with a 46-28 advantage in points in the paint and also outrebounded the Bobcats, 48-39.
In addition to the play in the post,
Emily Puskarich chipped in 14 points and
Makenzie White recorded a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.
The Falcons shot 44.3 percent (27-of-61) from the field compared to just 34.2 (26-of-76) for the Bobcats. The Falcons also drained 22-of-25 (88%) from the free throw line while Wesleyan shot just 10 foul shots, making six.
Wesleyan held an 11-to-3 advantage in made three-points attempts and also forced the Falcons into 22 turnovers.
Wesleyan was led by Adrian Cunningham off the bench with 14 points in the losing effort. The Bobcats also got 13 from Allie Browne, 11 from Alexa Szelong and 10 from Kambrie Bosley. Tara Goldman just missed a double-double with nine points and nine boards.
The Falcons will travel to Glenville State on Monday evening for a 5:30 p.m. tip against the Pioneers at the Waco Center.
