Falcons Run Past Cavs On Senior Day, 84-69

FAIRMONT, W.Va. -- Emily Lohr scored 23 points and Hailey Garrett recorded a double-double on senior day to lead Fairmont State past the University of Virginia's College at Wise, 84-69, on Saturday afternoon at Joe Retton Arena.

Emily Lohr just missed a double-double by adding nine rebounds to her 23-point performance and Hailey Garrett scored 18 points and pulled down 11 rebounds in the victory. Fellow senior Hallie Gunnoe also reached double figures with 14 points, five rebounds and four assists. Tess Zufall made the start at point guard for the Falcons and recorded nine points after knocking down a trio of three-pointers.

With the victory, FSU improves to 21-6 overall and 15-6 in the Mountain East Conference. UVa-Wise falls to 9-17 overall and 8-12 in the league.

Fairmont State rolled offensively by shooting 52 percent from the field and scoring 42 points in the paint. The Falcons also recorded 17 assists and turned the ball over just 13 times in the victory. Both teams combined for just four missed free throws on the afternoon.

The Cavs held a slim 37-36 advantage on the glass but shot just 39 percent from the field and 2-of-9 from behind the arc (22%). UVa-Wise was led by Kayla Carey with 13 points in the loss. Taylor Sandidge and Kehana Grayer each added 12 points for the Cavs and Naya Williams added nine points and a team-high nine rebounds.

After Fairmont State opened up a 17-4 advantage at the 11:20 mark of the opening half, UVa-Wise clawed its way back into the game by cutting the lead to as few as five, 30-25, with just over two minutes remaining in the half. However, that was as close as the Cavs would get to the Falcons as FSU pushed its second half lead to as many as 23 at the midway point of the half before closing out the 84-69 victory.

FSU will wrap up the 2014-15 regular season next Saturday when they travel to Shepherd for a 2 p.m. tip with the Rams. Shepherd is currently in second-place in the MEC standing with an 18-8 overall record and 15-5 mark in the league. SU will host Virginia-Wise on Monday evening in a make-up game from Thursday's cancelation.
